  3. Starting/Reactivating NSBE Jr Chapters

We are excited to hear that you are interested in chartering a chapter. Please note that if you're interested in starting a NSBE JR Chapter, you will need to complete the NSBE background check.

In an effort to maintain the highest standards for our impressionable youth, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is mandating that all NSBE Jr. Advisors, volunteers, and chaperones who interact with our students complete a background check. NSBE is committed to the safety of all persons who are associated with NSBE. This also includes teachers and school administrators. We are aware that each state requires all teachers and administrators to complete a background check, however we cannot accept this as a waiver since our process has a separate list of policies and stipulations.

As of July 31, 2021, every NSBE Jr. Chapter Advisor, volunteer, and chaperone must provide a satisfactory background check to have access to the chapter portal. Each background check will be considered current for five years. We will send reminders six months from the time of the expiration of your background check, to give you ample time to complete a new one. As a Chapter Advisor, chaperone, or volunteer, you will be responsible for payment of any cost associated with the background checks. Listed below are the prices for the background checks, by location.

United States: $15 International: $20 (Dependent on country; please see the Info Cubic website for more information).

Chapters that are not in compliance (meaning they do not have at least one Advisor who has provided a satisfactory background check) will have all access to their chapter revoked. They will not be able to register for or participate in NSBE-sponsored events and will be ineligible for any financial support or awards. A person will be ineligible to have access to any NSBE Jr. chapter or volunteer service if the person:

1. Refuses to consent to a criminal background check;

2. Makes a false statement in conjunction with such criminal background check;

3. Is registered or required to be registered on any sex offender registry;

4. Has been convicted of a felony in the past five years; or

Has been convicted within the past five years of a misdemeanor involving:

1. Physical assault

2. Cruelty to animals

Applicants convicted of crimes not listed above will be evaluated on an individual basis to determine whether they should be excluded from consideration based on the conviction. Please complete your background checks by clicking the link here.

Once your background check has been approved, please fill out the chapter petition form. Once received, I will forward you a confirmation email. Please note that approval can take a few business days but we will work diligently to provide our feedback.

I hope this information was helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions.
